Wireless Internet: Wi-Fi Hotspots

Using the Internet wirelessly at hotspots has never been easier.

Here is the information regarding 802.11b/g Wi-Fi Hotspots:

One-time setup steps:
  • Go to My Account online from any computer if you have your Access Code handy, or click on My Account in the tray icon menu (System Tray Icon).
  • Click on the link to request a PIN (if you don't already have one) or configure enhanced services.
  • Check the "Enable wireless access" box after reviewing the terms of service online, then click on the "Request PIN" or "Save Changes" button.
  • Write your PIN down so you can take it with you and make a call from any phone -- and your Slingshot software can also remember it for you (click on the My PIN... in the tray icon menu and follow the instructions)
Note that you can always view your PIN again at any time by going to My Account when online from any computer if you have your Access Code.

How to connect to the Internet at a wi-fi hotspot:
  1. Go to a wi-fi hotspot with your wireless-enabled notebook
  2. Make sure that...
    • your Wireless Network Connection is enabled in the Network Connections control panel applet
    • your wireless modem is connected and on, or your hardware is turned on (e.g. if you have a physical wireless switch)
    • you are connected to the hotspot's wireless network (depending on your system's settings, you may need to choose among the available wireless networks manually)
    • you have no open VPN connection
Windows or your wi-fi hardware's software should show you as being connected before continuing to the next step.
  3. Launch slingshot and choose the Wireless connection option
  4. In the Wireless dialog, you should see your username (SLINGSHOT/youraccesscode) and your PIN (if you had previously told slingshot to remember your PIN)
  5. If necessary, type in your PIN
  6. Leave "Manual login" unchecked and click the Connect button
  7. If slingshot is able to log you in, the browser should appear with a slingshot page.
  8. If slingshot is not able to log you in automatically, then you must login manually as follows:
    • check the "Manual login" option and click the Connect button
    • a browser window will open for you, which should show a page with a login form or link
    • Copy and paste your username and PIN into the logon form in the browser
    • Usually you will get a popup browser window with a logout button (you may need to disable your popup blocker or allow it for the login page)
If you are using Windows XP, We recommend you click the "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings" checkbox in the Wireless Network Connection properties dialog.

If you are having trouble with step 2, you may wish to:
  • verify that you do not have a static IP or default gateway configured
  • restart Windows
  • verify that you have an available balance for wireless in your slingshot account
